☕ Jo Coffee – Class Is In Session!

Whether you’re new to coffee or a lifelong coffee lover, you probably have a few questions.
Here are the answers to the 10 most common coffee questions we hear from our customers.

1. What’s the difference between Arabica and Robusta?

At Jo Coffee, we use 100% Arabica beans. Why? Arabica is known for its smooth, nuanced flavors with hints of fruit, chocolate, or nuts. Robusta has a stronger but more bitter profile. Arabica beans offers a more refined cup, perfect for savoring.

2. How much caffeine is in my coffee?

Caffeine content depends on the bean, roast, and brew method.

  • 8 oz drip coffee: 80–120 mg

  • Espresso shot (1 oz): ~63 mg

  • Cold brew: Often higher due to longer steep time.

Fun fact: Roast level doesn’t change caffeine much — it’s more about brew strength.

3. Is coffee healthy?

In moderation (3–4 cups a day), coffee can be a healthy part of your diet. It’s loaded with antioxidants and has been linked to improved brain function, reduced risk of certain diseases, and a boost in metabolism. Just watch the sugar and cream if you’re calorie-conscious.

4. What’s the best way to store coffee?

Keep it fresh:

  • Store in an airtight container, away from light, heat, and moisture.

  • Avoid the fridge — coffee absorbs odors.

  • Freezing is fine for long-term storage, but keep it sealed and portioned.

We recommend buying whole beans and grinding right before brewing for maximum flavor.

5. What’s the difference between light, medium, and dark roast?

  • Light roast: Bright, acidic, with more delicate flavors.

  • Medium roast: Balanced, smooth, and popular for everyday drinking.

  • Dark roast: Bold, smoky, with a heavier body.

Jo Coffee offers all roast levels, so you can match your taste mood to your cup.

6. How should I brew coffee for the best flavor?

The “best” method is the one you enjoy most, but here are a few tips:

  • French press: Full-bodied and rich.

  • Pour-over: Clean and nuanced.

  • Espresso: Intense and concentrated.

  • Drip machine: Convenient and consistent.

For every method, use fresh-ground coffee, filtered water, and the right grind size.

7. Is USDA Certified Organic and Fair Trade Certified coffee worth it?

Yes — and we’re proud that Jo Coffee is USDA Certified Organic and Fair Trade Certified. This means no synthetic pesticides, environmentally responsible farming, and fair wages for farmers. It’s better for you, better for the planet, and better for the people who grow it.

8. Does coffee help with weight loss or energy?

Caffeine can give you a short-term metabolism boost and improve workout performance. It also helps with alertness and focus. Just remember — more isn’t always better. Too much can cause jitters or affect sleep.

9. What’s the difference between cold brew and iced coffee?

  • Cold brew: Steeped in cold water for 12–24 hours, resulting in a smoother, less acidic, naturally sweet coffee.

  • Iced coffee: Hot-brewed coffee chilled over ice; brighter and more acidic.

Jo Coffee offers blends that shine in both methods.

10. Why does coffee sometimes taste bitter or sour?

Bitter coffee usually comes from over-extraction (too fine a grind, too hot water, or brewing too long). Sour coffee comes from under-extraction (too coarse a grind or brewing too short). Fresh beans, proper grind size, and correct brewing time make all the difference.
