{"id":48,"date":"2026-02-24T16:26:42","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T16:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jocoffee.com\/blog\/?p=48"},"modified":"2026-02-24T16:26:42","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T16:26:42","slug":"drinking-3-4-cups-of-coffee-may-slow-aging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jocoffee.com\/blog\/drinking-3-4-cups-of-coffee-may-slow-aging\/","title":{"rendered":"Drinking 3-4 Cups Of Coffee May Slow Aging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 0in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #4a4a4a;\">Drinking up to three to four cups of\u00a0coffee\u00a0could help slow aging for people with severe\u00a0mental illnesses, a major study has found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 0in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #4a4a4a;\">Researchers at\u00a0King\u2019s College London\u00a0looked at 436 participants with mental health conditions ranging from schizophrenia to major depressive disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 0in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #4a4a4a;\">Participants were asked how many cups of coffee they drank a day, with the options of 0, 1-2 cups, 3-4 cups and 5 or more cups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 0in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #4a4a4a;\">The study ultimately found that\u00a0drinking\u00a0more coffee can create a\u00a0longer life span\u00a0for telomeres, protective caps on our chromosomes that shorten as we age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 0in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #4a4a4a;\">The process is accelerated among people with severe mental illness, whose average life expectancy is 15 years shorter than the general population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 0in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #4a4a4a;\">White blood cells are commonly used to measure telomere lengths, so blood samples were taken from every participant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 0in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #4a4a4a;\">The study,\u00a0published\u00a0in the MJ Mental Health Journal, found the people who drank 3-4 cups of coffee had the longest telomeres. However drinking five or more cups led to telomere lengths showing a drop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 0in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #4a4a4a;\">\u201cWe know that coffee can help slow biological aging in the general population, but little is known about its effect on people with severe mental illness \u2013 a population whose lifespan is already shortened, in part due to age-related diseases,\u201d study co-author Vid Mlakar said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0in 0in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #4a4a4a;\">\u201cOur study shows that up to four cups of coffee per day is linked to longer telomeres among people with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
